This was a fun experience for us. A new program called Life Remodel selects a Detroit, Michigan neighborhood to dramatically overhaul. The kick off to get students at Cody High School involved in their own community was on May 7, 2014.
Life Remodeled is a non-profit organization that selects one neighborhood a year for a complete overhaul. The organization gather thousands of volunteers and donations for the effort. The rebuilding will take place in one week. During this ONE week period, the community schools will be updated, blight in the surrounding area will be removed, new homes will be built, existing homes will be improved, and vacant homes boarded up. All this is done in ONE WEEK!
The community surrounding Cody High School was selected for 2014. Life Remodeled will be coordinating the efforts of 10,000 volunteers. The most volunteers yet. Cody High School is composed of three different schools: Public Leadership, Technology, and Medicine and Community Health. Due to the bad weather, all the students had to be gathered in the main auditorium. This was the first time in many years all the students from the three schools were gathered in one place.
The event we attended was the kick off event. The goal was to inspire students at Cody High School to get involved in the efforts to revamp their own community. The expectation was to get 200 students to sign up. To everyone’s surprise, over 600 signed up. It was heart warming, energetic, and inspiring all at the same time. Seeing the kids at Cody High School get involved was awesome.
The big news of the event was the $200,000 donation from Skillman Foundation.
A.J. Gross was there to help serve hot dogs to the students. Enjoy!
